RSS — or Really Simple Syndication — enables users to subscribe to your blog. On many themes, it’s standard — but not always. If you want RSS and it’s not on your preferred theme, then you can set up an RSS feed using a Widget in your sidebar.

What’s a Widget? It’s a way easily adding customised functionality to your blog.

To create an RSS feed, click Appearance in the left-hand menu of the Dashboard to expand you options. Then click on Widgets.

You will be taken to another screen. Click on the RSS widget and, holding your mouse button down, drag it over to the sidebar at the right of the screen. Click the arrow in the top right-hand corner of the RSS widget to expand it. First enters the RSS feed or URL.

With a WordPress.com blog, this will usually take the following form: http://nameofblog.wordpress.com/feed/ For example, the RSS feed for this blog is http://onlineproductionworkshop.wordpress.com/feed/

Then give the feed a title such as ‘Subscribe’ or ‘RSS’.

You can also check the boxes to display content, author and date.
